What Is The Vault

Vault Artistic Gymnastics Guide

What is the Vault?

The vault is an artistic gymnastics apparatus which gymnasts perform on as well as the event performed on that apparatus. It is one of the 4 Olympic gymnastics events along with the Bars, Beam, and Floor. The gymnastics vault event is one of the most physically demanding, requiring gymnasts to have a combination of strength, power, and coordination.

Overview of the Event

The vault event is performed on a runway that leads up to a springboard. Gymnasts run down the runway and jump onto the springboard, using the momentum to propel themselves over the vault. They must then land on their feet and perform a series of acrobatic maneuvers, such as flips and twists, before dismounting.

Scoring

The vault is scored on a scale of 0 to 10. Judges evaluate the gymnast's run, takeoff, flight, landing, and dismount. A gymnast's score is based on the difficulty of the vault, the execution of the vault, and the gymnast's overall presentation.

History of the Vault

The vault has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1896. The first women's vault competition was held at the 1928 Olympics. Over the years, the vault has evolved significantly, with gymnasts performing increasingly difficult and dangerous vaults.

Famous Vaulters

Some of the most famous vaulters in history include Simone Biles, Nadia Comaneci, and Li Ning. Biles is the most decorated gymnast of all time, winning 32 Olympic and World Championship medals.
